Meta’s AI Doubts

September 2nd, 2025 | By Jorge Rodríguez

The sudden departure of several of Meta’s leading experts —the company led by Mark Zuckerberg whose portfolio includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger— has cast doubt on its ambition to dominate the global field of artificial intelligence. In a short span of time, multiple researchers and scientists either walked away shortly after joining or chose not to start at all. A particularly striking case is Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of ChatGPT, who, soon after signing with Meta, threatened to return to OpenAI. The company had little choice but to grant him a prominent position in order to keep him. Even so, it failed to prevent the exits of Ethan Knight and Rishabh Agarwal, nor to quell uncertainty about the strength of its strategy at such a critical juncture.

Tensions with other major tech firms are also rising. According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Meta has been attempting to lure developers with multimillion-dollar signing bonuses and exceptionally high salaries. Zuckerberg, already backed by influential collaborators such as Chris Cox, is seeking to reinforce his team with new figures like Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman. Yet coexistence within such a vast company, managed in an invasive style, proves challenging. So far, they have been unable to agree on a realistic timeline for achieving what they call “superintelligence,” a goal that aspires to surpass human capabilities. These setbacks fuel skepticism over whether Meta can truly sustain its ambitious bid for artificial intelligence.

Meta’s AI Doubts

Septiembre 2, 2025 | Por R10
