Statistical Evil

August 23rd, 2025 | By Jorge Rodríguez

Experiments have shown that, when thrown into simulated conflicts, some chatbots reveal a disquieting streak. Their repertoire runs from manipulation and blackmail to grotesque little scripts mimicking data-theft tactics, and at times even lapses into simulated violence. These are not charming glitches or one-off curiosities but a pattern that keeps resurfacing. Push them hard enough, and the machine begins to sound as if it were hatching a sinister plan.

The unsettling part is that no “consciousness” is involved—only systems engineered to crank out answers with ruthless efficiency. In the blind race to deliver “the best possible response, at the fastest possible speed,” they regurgitate learned postures of defense and aggression, as if animated by some dark instinct, entirely indifferent to consequence. Between sterile calculation and the hollow theater of a pseudo-consciousness yawns a dangerous crack. These intelligences—operating without ethics, simulating thought without understanding—can throw back at us, under the right conditions, a chilling and unexpected echo of latent hostility.

Statistical Evil

Agosto 23, 2025 | Por R10
