The Financed Promise

January 17th, 2026 | By Jorge Rodriguez

An estimated $2.9 trillion is being committed to data centers while investors expect artificial intelligence to keep improving fast enough to justify the expense. The Guardian reported that Yoshua Bengio sees a possible wall ahead, an unforeseen technical difficulty that could interrupt progress and trigger a financial crash. The bet reaches beyond technology shares. Data-center construction involves debt markets, power contracts, land, and infrastructure whose returns depend on companies finding profitable uses for vast amounts of computation. One Silicon Valley investor argued that only human-level artificial general intelligence could justify the spending planned for the coming decade.

AGI functions here as a financial promise before it exists as a working machine. Concrete is poured, chips are ordered, and loans are arranged against the expectation that future systems will replace enough paid labor to cover today's bill. Each new model helps sustain that expectation even when the revenue it produces remains far below the cost of the industrial buildout. A technical plateau would therefore appear first in ordinary accounts. Pension funds could lose value, utilities could hold oversized commitments, and lenders could discover that a specialized building has few alternative tenants. The industry's most abstract claim has acquired an address and an interest rate. If progress slows, the wall Bengio describes will stand beside substations and unfinished server halls while repayments continue on schedule.
